- Vancouver shines bright for over 1.2 Million spectators at English Bay and Vanier Park -

VANCOUVER, BC – August 4th 2014 – Vancouver’s summer heat wave prevailed for the final night of the 24th annual Honda Celebration of Light with team Akariya from Japan winning top honours narrowly beating out teams from the USA and France.

“Japan deserved the win” said Kelly Guille, Sirius Pyrotechnics producer, “they did really well building their scenes and maintaining a theme throughout the show while still creating varied emotional responses.  The judges and the public had a hard time deciding the winner because it was so close but in the end it was a few points that made the difference.”

Not only were fans treated to some of the greatest fireworks displays on earth, they were also able to take in three days of cultural programming, entertainment and sponsor activations throughout English Bay and Sunset Beach.

“We couldn’t have asked for more perfect conditions,” said Heather Sharpe, Producer of the 2014 Honda Celebration of Light, “It is so wonderful to see so many people enjoying all the festivities.”

The Honda Celebration of Light saw over 1.2 Million fans this year coming from communities across the Lower Mainland and throughout BC.

Dates for the 2015 event will be announced by the end of September.

Thousands expected to take in Honda Celebration of Light

Participants urged to respect neighbours and stay safe

Vancouver’s downtown skies will light up on Saturday when the 2013 Honda Celebration of Light kicks off the first of this year’s three fireworks shows over English Bay.

Thousands of spectators are expected to take in the shows on July 27, July 31 and August 3 from vantage points on and around English Bay, the Kitsilano beaches and throughout the West End.

Taking transit, cycling or walking is always your best bet to get to the fireworks as many street closures will be in effect. Motor vehicle access will be restricted, beginning at 6:30 p.m. for Kits Point and 7:30 p.m. for the West End, to residents with parking decals for the neighbourhood or those whose vehicle registration displays a neighbourhood address. Pedestrian exit routes will be posted in the West End: Burnaby Street for the Burrard and Waterfront Stations, Beach Avenue for Yaletown Station, and Guilford Street to access Georgia Street bus routes. Those on two wheels can take advantage of the complimentary bike valet at Sunset Beach.

The City of Vancouver is working to make the Honda Celebration of Light a zero waste event, and has set up recycling and garbage bins on the beach. Those taking in the show are asked to pack out what they pack in, clean up their garbage, and respect residents who live in the area by keeping noise to a minimum as you leave.

Open alcohol is prohibited on Vancouver’s beaches, streets and parks. Please help keep this year’s celebration a family-friendly event by limiting alcohol consumption to licensed establishments.

Beach marker signs will be placed along English Bay to help you find your friends and family. If you’re hoping to take in the show from the beach this Saturday, July 27, please be aware that a high tide will peak at 12.2 feet at 9:49 p.m. Signs will be posted on the beach and Parks staff will be on hand to ensure your viewing spot is not below the high tide line.

Boaters are reminded to follow safe boating guidelines and carry their boating license at all times.

More than one quarter of residents in the Lower Mainland plan to attend Celebration of Light

July 25th, 2013 by Honda Celebration of Light

More than one quarter of residents in the Lower Mainland plan to attend Celebration of Light

Vancouver B.C. – July 25, 2013 – Twenty-seven per cent of Lower Mainland residents surveyed say they will attend this year’s Honda Celebration of Light festival. This number does not include tourists or those who attend multiple shows. The festival will be held in Vancouver’s English Bay July 27th, 31st and August 3rd.

The survey indicates 90 per cent awareness of the festival with 80 per cent of respondents having a favourable impression of the popular Vancouver event. Sixty-three per cent of respondents said they had attended the event at least once in the last five years. Almost 40 per cent were aware that that bleacher tickets were available for purchase, a surprise given this is only the third year reserved seating has been available.

“This shows a strong interest in the festival, which has become an iconic Vancouver tradition and one of the most popular fireworks displays in North America,” says Brian Owen, CEO of NRG Research Group. “With the high level of awareness and support indicated by the survey, this year’s event could well attract record crowds.”

Thirty-five percent of respondents said they will take public transit (21 per cent of Vancouver residents and 42 per cent of those living elsewhere in the Lower Mainland) and 18 per cent will walk (48 per cent of Vancouver respondents and 3 per cent from elsewhere in the Lower Mainland).

An average of only two per cent of those surveyed indicated they would bike to the event. Surprisingly, one third of the respondents say they plan to drive (20 per cent of Vancouver respondents and 39 per cent of those living elsewhere in the Lower Mainland.)

The telephone survey by NRG Research Group and Peak Communicators consisted of 400 respondents and has a confidence interval of +/- 4.9 per cent 19 times out of 20. It is weighted to be represented by age, gender and whether from Vancouver or elsewhere in the Lower Mainland. It was conducted on July 22nd and 23rd.
